Frequently asked questions

Questions about outdoor tablet use

Yes, most* tablets and smartphones incorporate a true GPS (satellite positioning) receiver, just like the GPS units in cars, boats, etc. These devices don't need to be connected to a network to be positioned. These devices don't need to be connected to a network to be positioned. They use the latest GPS chips, and their accuracy is generally quite impressive! Your tablet will therefore give you your position anywhere on the globe, even in the middle of the Atlantic or on an Alpine path.

*As far as iPads are concerned, only WiFi+Cellular iPads (or WiFi + 3G for older models) have a real built-in GPS. If you own a WiFi iPad, you'll need to connect it to an external GPS to use the navigation applications.

Important: you are not obliged to take out a subscription with an operator when choosing a WiFi+Cellular iPad. For outdoor use, the 3/4G connection will be random as soon as you stray from the beaten track. If need be, you can always use the "Connection sharing" function with your smartphone. You may also be able to use a second SIM if your operator offers one. However, if you take out a subscription, you'll probably benefit from a price reduction on the iPad. Make your own calculations

In dense urban environments, there are other ways of locating your device besides GPS (by connection to a geo-referenced Wi-Fi access point, or triangulation of 3G/4G cellular networks), but they are no longer usable in open country or at sea.

If your device loses its location between town and country, either its GPS is not activated, or it lacks one (in the case of a wifi iPad). In the latter case, you'll need to purchase an external GPS.

A real GPS is essential when you leave urban areas (see our feature on the subject)

The iPhone and most Android phones have a real GPS.

For iPads, only the Wifi+Cellular models are equipped.

For other models, you'll need to check the specification sheet before you buy, especially as sales clerks aren't always up to speed!

As far as devices are concerned, it's best to opt for quality brands to avoid the risk of breakdowns on the high seas or elsewhere.

The best-known, the Apple iPad, is renowned for its reliability, and has become a must-have in two safety-sensitive sectors: marine navigation and aviation. The range of navigation, weather and other applications available in these two sectors is particularly rich and qualitative. Nearly 2/3 of American private pilots now use iPads for in-flight tracking. See also these testimonials from navigators

As far as apps are concerned, it's up to each individual to select and evaluate the quality of specialized apps before embarking on an extreme sport. iTabNav offers a selection of apps for many outdoor activities, but we can't guarantee that they are the best or that they meet your needs.

Questions about applications

No, apps are available on application download platforms (AppStore, Google Play, Windows Marketplace, etc.). They must therefore be downloaded directly from these platforms. To make this operation easier, iTabNav has selected a number of apps (see our guide), each with a direct link to the application.

We offer a selection of applications for each sporting activity, accessible from our " Apps" menu. It's not an exhaustive guide, nor a guarantee of quality, but we've tried to list what we think are the best or most popular apps.

I use an app that works very well in my sport, but it's not on your site: how can I find out about it?

Let us know directly via our contact box, and we'll publish it in our app guide as soon as possible. Thank you very much!

Questions about tablets

We don't sell tablets or smartphones, because our customers are often already equipped, and we think it's important for everyone to be autonomous in their choice and use of equipment.

Our ambition is to help you discover all the things you can do with a standard tablet that you didn't dare take out of your living room before!

It's essential to know your iPad model before choosing your protection. But the iPad model number doesn't appear on the product itself, or on the screen!

But we have a foolproof trick: go to the device's Settings menu, then touch General > Information > Model. Simply copy this code into a Google search, which will give you the commercial reference of your device! With iOS 13 and later, the model name is now visible in this Information section.

Even if you're not particularly fond of Apple, we'd advise you to go for an iPad, even a second-hand one!

You're guaranteed to find the widest choice of suitable protection and accessories, and often the best specialist applications too. There's no point in saving €100 on a tablet, only to find that you can't find a waterproof case or a mount for your favorite sport.

And unfortunately, it's still very hard to find quality waterproof protection for Android tablets.

In terms of outdoor use, all iPads are usable, even older models.

For new iPads, at the beginning of 2023, the family consists of 5 models of increasing screen size:

8.2'' screen > iPad mini 6

10.9" screen > iPad 10 or iPad Air5

11" screen > iPad Pro 11

12.9" screen > iPad Pro 12.9

Whatever the model, all screens have the same width/height ratio: applications therefore have strictly the same content. Likewise, all iPads have a battery rated to last around 10h (actually more like half that in intensive use with GPS and screen on at 100%). So, your choice will depend on your budget and your criteria of portability (small model) or comfort (big screen!)

If you're not sure, the standard iPad (iPad 10) is more than enough, and powerful enough to run all your navigation applications!

To avoid buying an external GPS, always choose a Wifi+Cellular model!

For mixed home/browsing use, 64GB models are sufficient: you'll be able to put all the apps you want with navigation maps, surf the web and do your e-mail, and still have plenty of room for music and photos.

If you download a lot of music or videos, go for a larger size.

Absolutely! Since their inception, iPads have been renowned for their exemplary reliability when properly protected, and many browsers still use first-generation iPads 2 to 4!

Nevertheless, it's best to get a recent iPad (from around 2018), still supported by Apple and capable of receiving system updates for a few more years... You'll also have access to a wider choice of accessories with recent models.

Don't hesitate to visit the"Refurbished Devices" section of the Apple Online Store, which offers recent refurbished hardware at attractive prices. You can also visit some of the best-known sites for buying and selling refurbished equipment, such as the French site Backmarket.

The small 'i' in iTabNav is a reminder of the origins of our business, which sold only accessories for iPad and iPhone... simply because there was nothing else! The phenomenal commercial success of these two devices has prompted a huge number of developers with a passion for sport to start developing applications that better serve their needs. This in turn created a strong demand for hardware accessories, prompting manufacturers to go for Apple accessories rather than products with a shorter market life.

Even in 2025, despite Android catching up, Apple products will still be those for which the range of applications and outdoor accessories is by far the most developed. It's also important to note that the same application often has more features in its iOS version than in Android.
