WEATHER 4D LITE / WEATHER 4D ROUTING
WEATHER 4D Lite 16.99 € - iOS / Free - Android : basic version for the general public for multi-activities.
WEATHER 4D Routing - 37.99€ iOS only - advanced version for maritime navigation with routing module, satellite phone query management, GRIB file history management.
This well-known application has recently been revised and now benefits from a new interface derived from the "Routing and Navigation" version (see in navigation applications).
Weather4D Lite is provided as standard with the GFS global forecast model at 0.25°, 0.5°, 1° and 2° resolutions. It also provides paid subscription access (€37.99 per year) to 38 high-resolution weather models including NAM, COAMPS, WRF (USA), GEM (Canada), ARPEGE Europe, AROME, AROME HD (France), AROME (DOM-TOM), as well as WW3 wave and MERCATOR OCEAN current models and MFWAM and NCOM current models.
The application allows you to create custom zones on the globe and select the characteristics of the GRIB files to download: choice of data, resolution, periodicity, file size, etc. The GRIB files are downloaded from the vendor's own servers in wifi or 4G, and can also be obtained by satellite (native support for Iridium Go)
Weather forecasts are displayed in one or two (split) windows (iPad only), offering several display combinations of the same area: weather forecast and wave or current forecast, comparison of different models. The two windows can be dissociated to display the same area at different scales.
The Routing version adds the following features to the Lite version:
- route import from any application that can export/import routes (iNavX, iSailor) and visualize the weather according to the boat's progress
- import of speed polars with management of multiple sail combinations
- routing for regatta sailing or mixed sail +motor for cruising, with options (waves, max wind etc - see this video)
- Resume routing during navigation (from the ship's position)
- export of optimized routes to any application that can export/import routes (iNavX, iSailor)
Sailgrib is an application that allows you to load and view grib files from different sources (SailGrib, SailDocs, Great Circle, MeteoConsult, GMN, ...) by direct download or email. The GFS, WW3, COAMPS, NAM, GCWF, MyOcean (IBI, Baltic, Global) models are available to visualize wind, pressure, clouds, rain, air temperature, air stability, wave height and direction and finally ocean and tidal currents.
The application also allows you to download grib files with a satellite phone using the iridium Go, or the wXa-122 Optimizer.
The paid version allows you to obtain up to 16 days of forecasts (GFS model), the free version is limited to 48 hours.
iPhone version: complete weather app, user-friendly with a lot of datas (area selection, visual display of areas with specific weather conditions, swell prediction, sea state, temperature, pressure, high tide...). All these predictions are available over 10 days !
iPad version: design is totally different, with for example, a customizable landing page. Some restrictions, you have to use the iPad in landscape mode, no animations for weather which makes it difficult to evaluate changement over a specific location. It doesn't accept files import export so you have to charge datas just before boarding over 3G.
Also complete weather app for pro and normal users.
Features list is impressive (visible on iTunes) with, as example, forecast up to 16 days (over 6 days, it's not a forecast it's a tendency), rain radar map, a "Grib Robot" feature that optimises your satellite
The list of features is impressive (see the description on iTunes) with e.g. forecasts up to 16 days (over 6 days, it's more a trend than a forecast), rain radar maps , a "Grib Robot" feature to optimize your satellite files download from multiple servers, possibility of creating a background route on a vector land map.
However the application is far less aesthetic and ergonomic than Weather4D, and if it allows to draw a route on the map, it does not routing calculation. Many features are only available through integradted purchases ranging from 0.89 € to € 41.99 €.
HF Weather Fax is an application for decoding facsimile weather maps on an iPad, iPhone or Android device. Weather analysis and forecast maps are provided by radio stations around the globe. They are broadcast on short waves and can easily be received by SSB receivers, as found in catalogues for pleasure craft.
A description of the hardware to be implemented is available in this article.
Allows you to view the transcript of the Navtex marine weather messages without the need of a dedicated receiver!
Uses the audio signal from a radio, picked up by the microphone of the iPad.
