Live your canoeing adventure to the full with your tablet!

Making a success of a long canoe trip or descent requires a certain amount of preparation, especially if you plan to bivouac en route. Carrying a tablet could come in very handy both in preparation and along the way.

Canoe-camping, which originated in Canada, is becoming increasingly popular in Europe. This activity combines the pleasures of gliding with those of bivouacking in the wilderness. But setting off for several days of adventure requires effective preparation.

The tablet to replace the map

Of course, you'll need a quality boat and all the camping equipment you'll need. But you'll also need a reliable means of finding your bearings and orienting yourself along the way. Rather than carrying a large number of paper maps with you, which are liable to get damp at any time, you could use an iPad or Android tablet with a suitable protective shell.

You can download IGN topographic maps of the area from a number of apps. The tablet's high-resolution touchscreen also offers superior reading comfort, with the ability to zoom in on areas of particular interest. Maps can be downloaded to your tablet, so they can be used without a mobile signal. With GPS, you can locate yourself at any time and benefit from navigation to a defined location. A detailed aerial view of the area in which you are located will help you spot suitable places to spend the night, or find nearby villages for refueling.

Anticipating weather hazards

An essential factor to take into account on an itinerant trip lasting several days is of course the weather, and in particular the risk of thunderstorms. Here again, your tablet or smartphone will come in handy, thanks to the many weather applications available (see our selection). What's more, if there's a strong risk of thunderstorms, you can search for nearby hotels or inns where you can take shelter and spend the night.

Numerous other functions

If you're a fan of statistics on your sporting performance, there are plenty of applications for that. You can find out your speed, average speed, distance covered or distance to go. What's more, it's also possible to record your route, so you can keep track of it and compare it with your previous performances, or simply share it with your friends.

The iPad and other tablets also feature excellent photo and video sensors for capturing and sharing memories.

You can also record all the information that might come in handy during your trip: how to pitch your tent, practical camping recipes, which mushrooms are edible, etc. And after a long day of paddling and facing the currents, you'll surely feel the need to engage in more playful activities. Reading, games of all kinds, movies - tablets offer many ways to relax.

Protecting and securing your tablet

The waterproof covers sold on this site are ideal for protecting your tablet or smartphone from rain, splashing water and even immersion for a few minutes. In addition, there are fastening systems that can be screwed onto the canoe, with quick-release clamps, or practical armband systems. Last but not least, if you're a fishing enthusiast, a fishing sounder with a flexible arm will come in very handy!
