The interest of tablets in outdoor sports.

Although not designed for this purpose, tablets prove to be excellent tools for various outdoor activities, often surpassing specialized devices. They are already popular among many enthusiasts in areas as diverse as navigation, aviation, motorsports, or even for activities such as hiking or cycling.

Dedicated devices: an increasingly unattractive offer

Electronic devices are becoming more and more present in our sports and outdoor recreational activities, addressing various needs for comfort, enjoyment, or safety:

  • GPS location and navigation
  • Mobile or satellite telecommunications
  • Capture and sharing of digital photos and videos
  • Training tools: tracking effort, distance...

To satisfy enthusiasts, manufacturers have designed specialized devices that are shockproof, water-resistant, and dustproof. Although they are functional, these devices do not meet current expectations:

  • They are often limited to a single function
  • Their features are not expandable
  • Their ergonomics are far from current standards (buttons, small screens...)
  • The market does not justify regular upgrades, limiting the integration of the latest display, GPS, communication technologies...
  • Their cost is high

The Advantages of Tablets and Smartphones for Outdoor Use

In comparison, smartphones and tablets offer numerous benefits: high-quality screens, simplified ergonomics, and the ability to perform multiple functions simultaneously (communication, GPS, photography, etc.).

They are equipped with the latest, high-performance, and energy-efficient components, providing remarkable battery life. They also offer a multitude of applications that make features once reserved for professionals accessible, such as highly accurate weather forecasts, routing, or displaying specialized maps, all at an affordable price.

But that's not all: unlike specific equipment that becomes useless outside of sports practice, tablets accompany us everywhere and facilitate the preparation of our activities. For example, a variometer for paragliding is useless outside of flying, while a tablet can be used to plan the flight, identify danger zones, check the weather at home, and even serve as a variometer during the flight!

These advantages have attracted many users around the world: nearly two-thirds of American private pilots use an iPad in flight, and many sailors (including professional navigators) use them on all the seas of the globe.

Reliable tools, even outdoors

Tablets and smartphones are generally very reliable thanks to their monobloc construction, the absence of hard drives, mechanical joints, and physical keyboards, making them more robust than traditional PCs. However, they are not designed for extreme use.

Fortunately, high-performance protective cases are available to make these devices almost indestructible, or at least capable of withstanding shocks, vibrations, water splashes, dust, and other hazards encountered during sports and outdoor activities.

Furthermore, an increasing range of mounting and transport accessories, as well as electronic devices, are available to enhance the functionalities of tablets to satisfy demanding users.
