Presentation
The Redport Optimizer wXa-213 is the latest generation Optimizer, following on from models wXa-102, wXa-112, wXa-122 and wXa-203. This device is first and foremost a satellite router that enables an existing satellite phone connection to be shared with various on-board terminals: PC, tablet, smartphone etc., making it easier to retrieve e-mails and weather files.
Since the wXa-2xx generation, it can also be used for "Voice over IP", c.a.d. to manage voice communications from a smartphone or tablet using the satellite line.
This use is similar to that of an Iridium Go, provided you already own a satellite handset. A word of warning, however: this product is more complex to use than Iridium Go and, above all, does not offer access to unlimited data subscriptions (reserved for Iridium Go).
Beyond its satellite use, the Optimizer wXa-213 can be used to aggregate different types of communications, as detailed below.
A communications node
Barely larger than a cigarette pack (12x9cm), the Redport Optimizer wXa-213 is designed to become your communications hub for boats, 4x4s, motorhomes and more.
It allows you to create a WiFi entry point to various communications networks, depending on your equipment:
- connected to a satellite phone, it enables your on-board IT equipment (PC, Mac, tablet, smartphone) to access the satellite communications network
- connected to a 4G dongle, it makes the 4G connection accessible to all on-board devices
- connected to a WiFi booster antenna (with the "Halo Wifi extender" - contact us), it enables you to share a high-speed connection to wifi hotspots
- connected to an NMEA0183 output, it can send NMEA data from the boat to tablets, smartphones and other PCs via WiFi
Another interesting feature is the Optimizer, a small router that can manage the simultaneous connection of several devices (PC, Mac, tablet, smartphone) to take advantage of the available data (up to 256 devices connected in theory). So your guests can also take advantage of the wifi connection at ports of call when it's available (when used with the Halo Wifi Extender).
Use for sending/receiving e-mails and surfing the web
For low-speed networks (especially satellite), the wXa-213 Optimizer compresses and filters data, so that all bandwidth is devoted to useful data.
To access e-mails from a tablet or smartphone, you can use the free Iridium Mail & Web app (iOS and Android) or the paid-for XGate* software from Global Marine Networks. For a PC, Mac or to access satellite networks other than Iridium, you'll need to use XGate* .
When used with a cell phone, the ergonomics of XGate and Iridium Mail & Web are quite similar. More information can be found in the iBook"Taking the weather by satellite". We also offerhelp with setting up your installation and remote troubleshooting.
For high-speed networks, it is possible to deactivate data compression/filtering to gain full access to data. In this case, you can use your usual e-mail application (Gmail etc.) and a standard web browser (Chrome, Firefox etc.). To do this, the Optimizer needs to be equipped with a 4G key, or connected to a wifi hotspot via the Halo Wifi Extender amplifying antenna.
Use in telephony and SMS
New-generation Optimizers can be used for "Voice over IP". This means you can make calls from your smartphone, tablet or PC without having to use the satellite terminal. As above, you'll need the XGate software to do this. Of course, you can still use the satellite handset directly :)
You can also send/receive SMS from XGate. The advantage here is that you can write SMS using an alphanumeric keypad rather than the satellite phone's numeric keypad!
Compatibility with satellite networks & terminals
The Optimizer wXa-203 has the advantage of being compatible with several satellite networks, and numerous terminals including: Iridium 9555, Iridium 9575, Iridium OpenPort Inmarsat IsatPhone Pro, IsatPhone 2, BGAN, FleetBroadband Thuraya XT, Thuraya IP Globalstar GSP-1600, GSP-1700, GSP-2900, etc
Of course, a valid subscription to one of these networks is also required.
Outdoor Wifi compatibility
By adding the Halo Wifi Extender amplified antenna, the Optimizer can be connected to external hotspots Contact us for details
NMEA data access
It's possible to retrieve a NMEA0183 input stream on the USB port, using a serial-USB cable connected to the NMEA output of your equipment (AIS, navigation unit, etc.). This data can then be used by navigation applications such as iNavX or iSailor. This use is reserved for experienced users
Power supply
Please note that the Optimizer is supplied only with a 110/220V mains adapter with international plugs. The product itself operates on 12Vdc. On a boat, if you don't have a 12/220V converter, you can cut the AC adapter cable and connect it to a 12V source on board (protected by a 4A fuse and easily disconnectable).
