Recharge an iPad safely outdoors.
How to ensure the iPad remains charged, even in the most humid conditions? Answers in this file!
1/ Equip yourself with a waterproof fixed or portable charger
A useful reminder: smartphones and tablets charge on a 5V USB power supply or via USB-C! Therefore, it is necessary to have such sockets on board. Some boats have a cigarette lighter socket near the helm, but it is difficult to find a cigarette lighter charger that withstands humidity and corrosion. It is therefore preferable to install a dedicated cockpit socket.
We offer various models of waterproof sockets that can be adapted to all types of boats or vehicles.
If you do not wish to install a fixed socket on the boat (for example, in the case of a rental), there are more mobile solutions, such as:
2/ Recharge the iPad with a waterproof cable
Among the protective cases currently on the market, only the aiShell cases allow charging with a 100% waterproof cable.
These cables are available in Lightning or USB-C versions (depending on the iPad model - see our compatibility guide). They are equipped with a specific tip that fits the opening of the waterproof case with a seal ensuring IP68 waterproofing: charging is even possible while submerged!
At the other end, the cable has a standard USB or USB-C connector that can be plugged into any USB/USB-C charger, including of course the two waterproof sockets mentioned earlier!
3/ Recharge the iPad with a powered cradle
The aiShell cases are also the only ones to offer an extremely original and practical device for the boat: the powered Car Cradle.
The system consists of a holder for the iPad equipped with its own power cable, to be plugged into any USB charger. It comes with an adapter to be mounted on the aiShell case in place of the usual power socket. This adapter is 100% waterproof (IP68).
When the iPad is placed in its powered Car Cradle, the adapter contacts the gold connectors of the cradle and allows the charging current to pass through.
The advantage of this system is to maintain total freedom of movement with the iPad, which can be easily removed without worrying about the cable and without risk to the waterproofing. The Car Cradle is resistant to humidity and saline environments and is available for all iPad sizes.
4/ Protecting Connectors from Corrosion
As mentioned earlier, the waterproof cable and the Car Cradle both come with a standard USB or USB-C connector. This has the advantage of being able to connect to any USB charger and accept any USB extension to adapt the necessary length according to the installation.
Using a 100% waterproof cockpit socket will ensure a long lifespan for these cables. To further extend this, it is recommended to protect the connectors from corrosion with a moisture-repellent spray.
An additional protection method is to acquire a small USB extension and install a heat-shrink sleeve where the cable and extension connect. This way, the aiShell cable connector will remain protected, and the extension can be replaced at the end of the season if necessary.
