The YDNR-02N is a very compact multiplexer that allows you to transmit data from most of the instruments on your boat via Wi-Fi to mobile devices (tablets, smartphones, computers). This data can be displayed in a majority of NMEA compatible applications such as Weather4D Routing & Navigation, SailGrib, iNavX, iSailor, etc.
The unit is featured with one NMEA2000 port (SeaTalkNG compatible), two NMEA0183 input/output ports, and one SeaTalk1 bidirectional port. This allows it to be adapted to different generations and brands of instruments that can be installed on the same boat. See our comparison: How to select my NMEA-WIFI router.
The YDNR-02N has a bidirectional converter between NMEA 2000, NMEA 0183 and SeaTalk protocols. NMEA0183 port rates are adjustable to accommodate instruments such as AIS receivers and transponders.
Received NMEA data can be transmitted over Wi-Fi by three independent, configurable data servers that can be configured to operate in either transmit, receive, or bidirectional mode. NMEA data from each protocol is translated into the other protocols and sent over Wi-Fi in the NMEA0183 format supported by most navigation applications.
The router creates its own Wi-Fi network (access point mode, by default), with a range of about 30 meters in open space, but it can also be connected to a Wi-Fi network already on board (client mode). For security reasons, the name of the Wi-Fi access point (SSID) can be changed, as well as the connection password.
The YDNR-02N, like all other devices of the brand, is provided with a built-in web server, which allows easy configuration and possible firmware update from any web browser on a computer or mobile device over Wi-Fi. The simplest way is to use the first server activated by default, choose the transmission protocol (TCP or UDP), and the transmission direction, set the NMEA0183 port rate (4800, 38400 bps, or more as required). All that remains is to connect the instruments.
In the configuration interface, a routing table is used to filter the transmission of data received by each server to the different ports as well as redirections between ports. This allows, if necessary, to fine-tune the load of data streams to older instruments with limited reception capacities and thus avoid overflows.
The web interface also features four configurable instrument repeaters pages that allow real-time visualization of data using a web browser on a computer, tablet or smartphone. It also displays the flow of scrolling NMEA sentences.
