Presentation: an autonomous wireless windvane for all types of boats
Calypso'sUltrasonic Portable is particularly suited to dinghies, transportable boats and light sailing, but can also be mounted on all types of craft.
It is totally wireless:
- Its power supply is provided by its integrated solar panel, with a battery that lasts for 30 days in no-light conditions.
- Data is sent via Bluetooth Low Energy: the advertised operating distance of 50m has been verified, and is more than sufficient for good reception even inside the cabin. What's more, in the event of a power cut, the product reconnects automatically in just a few seconds.
Compatible applications
This wind vane-anemometer is designed to work directly with a smartphone or tablet loaded with a compatible application.
The manufacturer's Anemotracker app (available on iOS or Android) is used to establish the Bluetooth connection and make the main settings (true wind/apparent wind, information refresh rate, wind value logs, data damping, heading offset settings if required). Apparent wind is displayed on a rosette or in tridata mode (heading, apparent wind degrees, apparent wind speed)
Other iOS and Android applications are compatible, including :
- Weather4D Routing & Navigation
- SailGrib WR
- iRegatta
- SailRacer
- qtVLm
For iOS users, we particularly recommend Weather4D Routing & Navigation, which offers the most advanced integration:
- access to all windvane parameters
- numerous setting options (course correction, damping adjustment, speed calibration, internal compass activation, etc.)
- chart display and instrument vision
- apple Watch support
- wind data can be sent to the NMEA network and to the pilot (see below)
Easy installation
This product is very easy to install: it has a female thread (diameter 16 mm) at its base, enabling it to be mounted on a suitable thread or on its specific bracket (see bottom of page).
An alignment mark must be placed on the bow of the boat (an offset in the application can be used to correct any angle offset). There's no cable to run through the mast, reducing noise and weight in the tops, and no deck pass to install. It's also ideal for transportables and all boats with removable masts.
Waterproof and submersible monobloc
The Ultrasonic Portable is a one-piece unit, with no moving parts, connectors or cables. It is totally waterproof (IPX8), even under immersion (tested for 30min/10m by the manufacturer, who nevertheless does not guarantee prolonged use at this depth).
It is therefore a windvane/anemometer suitable for light sailing. Usually, dinghies have no electronics on board, for fear of desalination and the absence of an on-board power supply. With an iPhone or tablet, well protected in a waterproof case, and navigation software, you can access cartography and wind/speed data for light sailing.
Connectivity
As mentioned above, this product is designed to be used primarily with Apple or Android mobile devices. Its Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity is very fast, and the device reconnects automatically in the event of a power cut.
The device can be complemented by NMEA Connect Plus to send wind data back to the boat's displays (via NMEA).
It is also possible to send data back to the onboard NMEA network using the Weather4D Routing & Navigation app, provided you have a Wifi multiplexer. This enables data to be displayed on several iPhones/iPads, on-board displays and even sent to the autopilot!
Last but not least, you can update your firmware via Bluetooth, so you're sure to benefit from future enhancements from the manufacturer.
