Make the most of your cycling with your smartphone
Meter, heart rate monitor, GPS - all essential functions for making the most of your outings, which can now be brought together in a single tool, the smartphone.
Prepare your outings with a smartphone
Whether it's a sporty mountain bike ride or a cycling tour lasting several weeks, every outing requires a minimum of preparation. First of all, if you're short of ideas or simply want to discover new routes, the ViewRanger app (iOS and Android) offers you routes programmed by professionals or other enthusiasts, with different levels of difficulty.
A glance at the weather forecast just before setting off can also be useful to avoid getting stuck in the middle of a thunderstorm. Apps giving you hour-by-hour information are available on the AppStore.
What's more, a smartphone can act as a real coach, helping you to get to know your abilities better and make progress, notably by setting performance targets and creating personalized training plans to stick to.
Performance monitoring
Mounted on the frame of your bike using a suitable bracket, a smarthone - or even a 7" tablet such as the iPad mini - is the perfect replacement for a dedicated computer. Apps let you know your speed, average speed, distance covered and calories burned. What's more, with an additional accessory, you can access your heart rate directly on your iPhone. You can also calculate the difference in altitude covered, both positive and negative.
If you want to evaluate your performance in a specific area and track your progress, a stopwatch function is also available. By using the Sports Tracker app (iOS and Android), you can compare your time with that of other users (see app selection) and challenge them on your favorite roads!
GPS and navigation
A smartphone can also be a powerful navigation tool. First of all, it's advisable to download all the maps you need, whether road or IGN maps: they can be consulted even in the absence of network coverage (see our special report on this subject).
Thanks to the integrated GPS, you can program a route and follow it using active navigation. You can also use voice commands to find your way, so you can stay fully focused on the road.
For the best reading comfort, a reasonably-sized tablet such as the iPad mini could be the right compromise. Lightweight and easy to handle, it can also be attached to your bike's handlebars.
...and everything else!
Taking your phone with you is also a guarantee of safety in the event of physical or material problems. And if you like to ride while listening to your favorite tunes, you can program a playlist for yourself using the music function (iPod or other).
If you're going on a multi-day expedition with your bike, the iPhone will be useful for many other things. Whether you're looking for nearby campsites, villages to stock up on supplies, stores to replace faulty equipment or simply tourist spots to visit, your smartphone will once again be an indispensable tool.
