Description of the Ultrasonic Portable Mini
The Calypso Ultrasonic Portable Mini wind vane-anemometer is an ultrasonic wind sensor that measures wind strength and direction with great accuracy. Its ultrasonic sensors are identical to those of its big sister Ultrasonic Portable from the same manufacturer. With its one-piece construction, it has no moving parts, for greater accuracy and longer life.
Completely waterproof, it contains an inductively rechargeable battery (charger supplied) for 150 hours of operating time (and several weeks offline).
It can be used in conjunction with a smartphone or tablet. Its miniature size (height 47mm, diameter 43mm, weight 78g) makes it easy to carry around, even in your pocket.
For best wind measurement, we recommend placing the wind vane on a clear surface, preferably at the end of a handle or pole. The base of the wind vane has a threaded hole, the same size as that of a camera, so that accessories such as a photo stand or selfie pole can be reused. For fixed installation, a mast support is available as an option. This allows the camera to be easily dismantled for recharging.
Important: as this device needs to be recharged regularly, it cannot be placed at the masthead of a cruiser, unless it is easily accessible.
Using the Ultrasonic Portable Mini on its own
After recharging theUltrasonic Portable Mini with the supplied charger (or any Qi charger), it is on stand-by, waiting to be connected to a smartphone or tablet.
Connection is via Bluetooth using the manufacturer's Anemotracker app (iOS and Android compatible). This app features different pre-configured data display modes depending on the activity: Sailing - Golf - Weather Station - Ballistic, but the user can also freely choose the parameters to be displayed (including, of course, apparent wind force and angle).
The Ultrasonic Portable Mini can also be connected via numerous other third-party applications, including Weather4D, SailGrib, iRegatta, Sail Racer etc. (see complete list below). What's more, the Ultrasonic Portable Mini can also be connected to a compatible Garmin watch!
Use in conjunction with the NMEA Connect Plus box
While the Ultrasonic Portable Mini only works live with iOS and Android mobile devices, or a Garmin watch, it is possible to integrate it into a NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000 network to display wind information on the various on-board screens. To do this, you need to install the NMEA Connect Plus box from the same manufacturer.
This box receives Bluetooth data from the windvane and converts it to a wired format (NMEA0183 or 2000 depending on version), while also relaying the Bluetooth signal. See detailed description of NMEA Connect Plus.
