Despite its compactness, the NOMAD of Digital Yacht is a class B transponder of excellent quality, equipped with an integrated GPS and a Wifi transmitter making it possible to send its data towards a tablet or smartphone
The NOMAD is a compact and portable device, easy to install and use. It comes complete with its mini antenna and the necessary cables and is powered by a simple USB plug: its installation is thus particularly fast since you just have to plug the cable & take out the antenna and hop! Surrounding ships are detected!
The Nomad is powered from any USB source: smartphone charger, USB cigarette lighter charger, USB port of a computer, external battery...) with a very low power consumption (0.6A on 5V, or 0.25A on 12V).
It is supplied with a small VHF antenna (with a small suction cup base) and 4m cable. The antenna must be placed outside with a suitable fixing means and already provides very honourable performances even placed on a soft top. It is possible to connect another VHF antenna (BNC connector) if it is already present on the boat.
The unit should preferably be installed vertically for good performance of its built-in GPS. It is supplied with self-adhesive velcro strips.
To be used to its full potential, the unit must be set up with your boat's MMSI number. This setting is made:
- either from a PC/Mac with the free Pro AIS utility (present on the CD rom or downloadable here
- either from an Android smartphone/tablet with the AISConfig app available on Google Play
Important: like any AIS transponder, your NOMAD will only transmit your information if you first set up your boat's identification information (especially the MMSI), otherwise it behaves as a simple receiver. In application of the regulations, it is not possible to modify this number, except for conveyors and yachting professionals. For boaters who wish to use the Nomad on several boats - for hire for example - it is not necessary to enter an MMSI and the unit can be used in receiver mode only!
The Nomad allows you to view the positions of surrounding vessels equipped with an AIS transmitter from any iOS or Android smartphone and tablet. It is necessary to install a navigation app capable of reading the NMEA data that will be sent in Wifi to the tablet (for example Weather4D 2.0, iNavX, iSailor...).
The tablet can also retrieve GPS data from the Nomad if needed.
It is possible to use the NOMAD with a PC or Mac by connecting it in USB (the USB port ensuring in this case both power and data)
Important: Unlike the Vesper XB-8000, the Nomad is not a NMEA wifi multiplexer: it has no NMEA input/output port to recover data from other instruments on your NMEA network!
