The halo wifi extender is an extension kit that is only compatible with the wXa-112/122 Optimizer satcom router. It allows the augmentation of the Optimizer possibilities by using it as a wifi router during the stopovers.
The kit comprises an antenna, a amplifier system and a PoE cable (Ethernet cable that also ensures the power supply of the amplifier). The kit is generally installed outside and you just have to connect the ethernet cable with the Optimizer that is inside the boat.
The ethernet cable doesn't suffer any loss even with long lengths, that is what makes it different from other cables such as a coaxial cable.
The antenna must be fixed on common marine mounts (like Glomex or other brand mounts with a standard 1 "x 14" thread). The mount is not provided, but it is very easy to find it at your shipchandler in several types depending on your configuration. The halo system is mounted on the tread with a sturdy stainless steel tube. (included- see pictures above).
Aletrnatively you can fix the amplifier with plastic collar clamps (included) placed in the 4 eyelets. (See photos)
The operating principle is the following: at anchor or in harbour, you scan the available wiFi networks (harbour office, local restaurant, network providers etc.) to choose the one with the strongest signal. The system "catches" this distant signal and makes it available as if you were in close proximity to the box. When the connection is established, wifi is available for all devices on board on a shared connection.
The connection can be made through any internet browser: it requires no software or driver and is perfectly usable with all types of device (tablets, smartphones, PC, MAC etc). The operating range depends on obstacles, transmission power of the box, height of the antenna etc. It can reach 1km and more whereas the usual wifi doesn't usually exceed 50m.
One interesting feature of this system is to be able to operate even when the wifi signal is very low. Indeed, you can activate the 'firewall' of the Optimizer that is normally intended to capt very low data flows from satcoms. The 'firewall' cleans the traffic to keep only essential data. It is useful to look to its emails for example. Please note this feature is only available with the paid XGate software (to be suscribed at Global Marine Networks).
